London’s Lavender Field
Want the perfect summertime escape from the city? I found my inner calm while wandering London’s Lavender Field!
When I moved into my flat (that I blindly rented via Gumtree) I was so happy to find that the place truly did exist. And believe it or not it was actually just like the pictures. As our landlord met us at the door to give us the keys, he proudly pointed out the freshly blooming lavender in front of each window. I mention this because these lovely plants are how I found out about the London lavender fields!
My landlord mentioned that he had bought his plants at the lavender fields. In Provence I questioned,?!? -envisioning him lugging a dozen lavender plants across the boarde
r. This is when he mentioned that the fields were just an oyster journey away (within zone six near Croyden.)
I still didn’t really believe him, I never could envision such a place in cold, rainy London. So, shortly after he left I did a quick Google search, and infact, my new landlord wasn’t a guy passionate about telling lavender lies, the FIELDS DID EXIST!!!
I marveled over the amazing pictures of purpled fields that filled my computer screen. I knew this was a sure stop during my summer here. So on a sunny July Friday, I made my way to Purley, then hopped on the 166 bus to Mayfield Lavender Field.
The short journey by bus is lovely, and brings you through charming towns with cottages and lots of greenery, a great escape from the city. The fields are located just a short walk from the bus stop. Your nose can lead the way as the rows of purple give off the amazing aroma of sweet lavender.
To enter the lavender fields, by foot, it is just a 1 pound fee and your off joining the others who are gallivanting along in search of the perfect new facebook profile picture. Taking a leisurely stroll and soaking in the lovely purpled hues and fabulous smells will surely help you do like a Londener and
‘Keep calm and carry on’.
The Mayfield Lavender field is gorgeous and a trip you will not regret. Located on site is also a café serving up lav
ender treats, like tea, ice cream and lovely cakes. There is also a gift shop. I had a lovely time wandering around the field while the beautiful sun warmed my cheeks and the sweet aroma of lavender filled my nose.
Ending my experience by sipping on a cup of lavender tea, and nibbling a ‘Ferry Cake’ at the café. The day drifted me right in to a lovely relaxed weekend.
The lavender is in bloom during July and August and the fields stay open into September. Depending where you are coming from a quick googlemap search may give you even better directions then the Purley/166 bus route I mentioned, as there are many different ways to access the fields via public transportation.

I just moved from Sanderstead to London and I had no idea that such fields existed right under my nose. Although to be fair I am originally from the countryside so that might be why.

What a fantastic idea and a real gem to discover in the midst of London. The gift shop must be amazing, there is something about lavender that is so divine.
What a lovely place to visit! It seems so relaxing! It’s nice that they have a cafe on site with some lavender tea!
WOW! I would love to go there especially during the summer. The fields are so beautiful to look at, very peaceful and serene.
I live near a place that has a field like this and I would love to go sometime when they are in season!
